Tour description

The three-day tour through Greina to the Lukmanier Pass is a great experience for nature lovers and hiking fans alike. On the trail you will wander through two cultures in two cantons, from Rhaeto-Romanic to Italian, and you will experience and be immersed in spectacular nature.

Good footwear is recommended as the terrain is very versatile including mountain paths, country paths, forest paths, stream crossings and steep slopes. Individual sections must be covered on paved roads. Magnificent views of the mountains and great nature experiences characterize this hiking trail.

1st stage: Vrin - Capanna Scaletta
The hike from Vrin to Puzzatsch is mainly by paved road through Walser settlements and past magnificent chapels. Alternatively, you can take the bus from Vrin to Puzzatsch (3.9 km, only in summer, please consult timetable). A well-marked path leads from Puzzatsch up to Pass Diesrut. Here the view opens onto the wide Greina plain with the meandering Rein da Sumvitg. After a short descent you will walk through the entire Greina plain with its numerous marshes, extensive pastures and imposing mountain scenery, all the way to Passo della Greina. From here it is only a few minutes to Capanna Scaletta.

2nd stage: Capanna Scaletta - Capanna Bovarina
On a narrow, partially steep and zigzagged path, the trail descends into the Pian Geirett. This part of walk until the Daigra village is predominantly on alpine pastures and between alpine bushes. Although the path is well marked and largely avoids the paved alpine and forest road, it is quite steep in some places. From Daigra to Campo, the descent is only moderately steep down through spruce and riverside forests. Alternatively, you can travel from Pian Geirett to Campo by bus (6.9 km, only in summer, please consult timetable). From Campo, the well-marked trail is initially steep but then levels out again for a while becoming somewhat more leisurely, before turning steep again for the final ascent up to Capanna Bovarina. The route runs through montane spruce forest, via alpine meadows and finally through larch forest mixed with spruce trees. In autumn, when the larch tree needles turn yellow, the top section of the trail offers a particularly beautiful landscape.

3rd stage: Capanna Bovarina - Lukmanier Pass
A slightly steep ascent through alpine pastures and past Alpe di Bovarina leads to the Passo di Gana Negra. The path is not well-marked throughout the meadows and therefore requires the appropriate attention. Further up, the path runs next to a narrow band of limestone rocks. The highlight of this tour is undoubtedly the scenery of round black clay boulders and calcareous slate of the Coroi series (Jura). These blocks mostly come from older rock falls from the Pizzo del Corvo and are more or less strongly weathered. The highest point of the pass is not precisely defined on the map because the passge extends across a shallow groove. The descent begins gently, then progresses steeply through alpine pastures down to the Lukmanier pass. Below Foppa di Negra you can get a good view into the Vallone di Casaccia with its bizarre dolomite rock and limestone formations. The view into the Valle Santa Maria with the Swiss stone pine and mountain pine forests is also spectacular, as is the view of the significant moorland landscapes. From Hospezi Santa Maria the postbus can be taken to Olivone or Disentis.
