Tour description

Tracking the world’s longest tunnel
57 kilometres and around 20 minutes separate train travellers from the North and South of Switzerland thanks to the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world’s longest tunnel. But it is more interesting to experience the trail from Erstfeld to Bodio, which lies above it, at walking pace.

Stage 4 Lukmanierpass - Carì

On the fourth day of your hike, you will again enter a different cultural area of Switzerland – Ticino. And your route will brush a plateau with a resonant name: the Piora syncline, notorious for the friable dolomite rock with which this basin is filled. Indeed, there is an outcrop of this crumbly, pale-yellow rock, which liquefies when subjected to water pressure, on the trail. Fortunately for the tunnel builders, the Base Tunnel passes underneath this zone. Hikers get to enjoy the gentle landscape of the high Alps, climb to the Passo del Sole and see the glacier of the Rheinwaldhorn in the distance. The high point of the stage and of the entire trail, however, is the Passo Predelp. It is worth clambering over the boulder strewn landscape to reach the nearby viewing point. Here you are not only again standing directly above the tunnel, you can view half of the mountain environment under which the tunnel passes. With this impression in your mind, you walk down to Predelp and the Agriturismo Alla Meta. You can also sleep in Capanna Prodör on top of Carì – please note that there is not always a warden present – or in Carì itself.
