This itinerary is an opportunity to spend a few days in this splendid Valley Leventina, with its many rural attractions. The route starts at Airolo, which is also the beginning of the Strada Alta, and goes towards Lurengo, passing through Altanca. ‘Osteria Altanca’ is a rural tourist centre with many excellent local products for sale. The 17 kms take 5 hours on foot or else you can take a bus and then the funicular railway from Piotta to Altanca. Once at Lurengo, have a meal at ‘da Paolin’, and sample some of the many local products on sale.
For a breath of fresh clean air, take a ride on the funicular from Altanca up to Piora (Variante A). From there it’s only 30 minutes walk to the lake of Ritom and a breathtaking view over the pre Alpine region and Lake Cadagno. Don’t miss the chance to sample the wonderful cheese made right there at the Alpe di Piora.
From Lurengo it’s advisable to take public transport to Mairengo – a good place for a ride on horseback in these charming surroundings. Keep going towards the south until you reach Faido. Don’t miss the azienda ‘Piana Selva’, accessible by private cable car. There’s a swimming pool, a ‘grottino’ – ‘La locanda del Cavaliere’ and they also offer riding lessons and offer mountain bikes for hire.
From Faido take the lower road as far as Calonico – about an hour’s walk, maybe a bit more. The centre of Calonico boasts several well preserved wooden houses with granite roofs, and an 18th century mill which has recently been restored. Have a look at the church of San Martino and the children’s playground, made entirely of chestnut wood. The road continues to Cavagnago ( a 2 hour walk) where it’s possible to spend the night at ‘agriturismo Bertazzi’ and visit the Alpe Stabiello, run by the same azienda.
Public transport will take you back to Airolo.
