The Almagell High-Altitude Trail is an extension of the Gspon High-Altitude Trail. It is primarily above the tree line and offers enchanting views of the Saas Valley and the spectacular Mischabel massif, which features the highest mountains in Switzerland. To the south, hikers also get a great view of the Mattmark dam and reservoir further down the valley. The view from the Triftgrätji is particularly impressive.
The trail starts on Kreuzboden, which can easily be reached with the Hohsaas Bergbahnen cableways.
From Kreuzboden, hikers head south along the first section of the Alpine Flower Trail towards the Triftgrätji. After the avalanche barriers, the trail heads up above Grundberg and into the beautifully romantic Almagell Valley. After a quick break at the Almagelleralp mountain hotel, hikers will be ready to take on the steep descent to Saas-Almagell over the Chüelbrunnji and the Spissgrabe. They will then be able to catch a PostAuto bus from the village square to their chosen destination.
For an alternative route with a less demanding descent, hikers can take the Adventure Trail to Furggstalden instead. From there, it is possible to get down to Saas-Almagell on a chairlift.
Pay attention to the cableway timetable.
Make sure you plan enough time for the hike and be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and good outdoor clothing.
