Tour description

This trail’s final destination, the Almagell mountain hut, has long been a popular spot for hikers, mountain climbers and rock climbers. Mountain climbers generally use the hut as a starting point for traversing the Weissmies (4,023 metres a.s.l.). Rock climbers take on the challenges posed by the many multi-pitch routes or attempt to traverse the massif at the popular “Dri Hörnli” climbing park. For hikers, the beautiful tributary valley offers magnificent views and a varied landscape. They can also stay a night in the hut, for a fun holiday experience with a difference.

The trail starts in Saas-Almagell, at the bridge that crosses the Almagellerbach stream, and continues with a steep ascent up towards Spissgrabe and Mittli Flüe, and on to Chüelbrunnji. From there on, the trail climbs more gently and mostly follows the path of the Almagellerbach stream to the Almagelleralp. Following alongside the stream and past the “Zen stones”, the trail then turns left (facing uphill) towards the Almagell mountain hut, which is situated 2,894 metres a.s.l. in a very rocky area. This is a promising place to come across an ibex or two.

Alternative A: Hikers setting out from the Almagelleralp can reach the Almagell mountain hut by taking an alternative route that involves turning off to the north and going via Giw. This route is not quite as well signposted and it leads over several rocky ridges. This alternative is primarily recommended for sure-footed hikers with a good head for heights. (6.6km; 1234Hm; 4,5h) Almagelleralp - Giw - Almageller mountain hut

Alternative B (Two-day-tour): The next morning, hikers can set their sights on the Zwischbergen Pass from the Almagell mountain hut and enjoy a magical though long descent to the Zwischbergen, or even Gondo. As mentioned earlier, the trail is long, and the pass is exposed on both sides at some points. The trail offers magnificent views, however, and passes by the Zwischbergen Glacier. A Postauto bus can be ordered by telephone from Zwischbergen to bring hikers back to Gondo or to the Simplon. (19.8km; 374/2429Hm; 7h) Almageller mountain hut - Zwischbergen - Gondo (Alpine Route)

Make sure you plan enough time for the hike and be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and good outdoor clothing.

Walk carefully on the scree.

Certain parts of routes A and B are intended solely for sure-footed hikers with a head for heights.
