Tour description

Around Locarno it is traditional to add goats’ milk to cows’ in the proportion of about 10- 20%. The resulting cheese is whiter with a sharper taste. We suggest you visit 3 rather unusual alpeggi: Fümegna, Mügaia, and Saléi, all in different valleys.

Alpe Fümegna is in Val Pincascia. To get there, drive up the Valle Verzasca from Gordola. After about 12kms take a right turn to Sambugaro. After another km, another right turn towards Val d’Agro. There’s one more kilometre of surfaced road which then gives way to a dirt road which leads to a parking area. Leave the car and take the signed path to Corte di Fondo – a good three hour walk. Here, there’s a dairy and cheese maturing centre.
Alpe Mügaia (Variante A) is in Val Redorta. Until it was destroyed by an avalanche in 1998 it was certainly the most attractive of the alpeggi; unfortunately it was not possible to rebuild it in the original stone. Once at Sonogno (Valle Verzasca), leave the car, and walk towards Grotto Redorta and Grotto Efra where you’ll find a path signed for the cable car at Püscen Negro. Keep left for the Alpe Cortign, then continue for about three hours until you get to Alpe Mügaia. Here they produce formagella and full fat semi-soft cheese.
The third route (Variante B) goes into Valle Onsernone and then Valle Lavadina. To get there take the Ponte Brolla road from Locarno, then take the left to Tegna, Verscio and Cavigliano, after which there’s a right turn into the valley. Follow the signs for Funivia Alpe Saléi as far as Vergeletto (about 25 kms from Locarno). This cable car will take you directly to the alpe. They produce their own cheese SALEI made with a mixture of cows’ and goats’ milk., butter, and buttermilk, ricotta and yoghurt . It’s a wonderful place for hiking. It’s a short walk (30 minutes) to the charming little lake of Saléi. If you want to stay the night, try the Capanna Saléi which has 25 beds and is very near the alpeggio. If you feel like going even higher, it’s possible to climb up to Saléi from Comologno. It takes about two hours.
