On both the bike route and the hiking trail toward Steinstoss, the high moors around Rothenthurm are a unique experience. On hot days the air is aromatic with the smells of marshy moor, plants and wood. This makes up for the short stretch that follows in the bike lane of the Biberbrugg-Schindellegi road. Below the Schindellegi railway station we branch off to the left and stop after a short downhill stretch to admire the fantastic view of the area around Lake Zurich. Following the sign «Zug/Hütten» we cross the railway tracks. On the other side of Hütten we turn right to Schönenberg and then left to Hirzel. Before the climb up to the village we cross the heavily traveled Horgen-Sihlbrugg road. Hirzel welcomes us with its homey half-timbered houses and the pretty little Johanna Spyri Museum awaits a visit.
On the Horgenberg we pass the idyllic Chlausen pond and stop for a swim and picnic. Thus refreshed, we pedal on toward Thalwil. Shortly after entering the woods in Wührenbach we turn left and ride parallel to the high-speed highway to Gattikon. Then under the highway and left on the Säumerstrasse, sometimes in the woods, to «Park im Grüene», perfect for children. At the traffic circle after the park we turn right onto Langhaldenstrasse and coast downhill to the Rüschlikon railway station.
Alternative A: shortcut on the hiking path after Steinstoss.
Alternative B: travelers with young children unused to traffic should start out in Schindellegi.
Note: the route is marked «Radroute Zürichsee».
