The tame marmots that reside below Spielboden are a must-see attraction for all visitors to the Saas Valley. As soon as the furry little rodents awake from hibernation they begin to frolic around on the hillsides and don’t miss any opportunity to beg a morsel from passing hikers. They have even been known to give some of our younger visitors a little kiss (see photo).
The trail starts from the sports ground in Saas-Fee and leads up to the beautiful Gletschersee, hidden behind the Gand moraine en route to Spielboden. From there, the path continues to the Gletschergrotte restaurant located on the Gletscheralp. In the olden days, farmers had to herd their cows and goats over the glacier tongues before these meadows could be put to use.
After crossing the Gletscheralp, hikers have a final climb up to Spielboden. This is the location of Spielboden mountain restaurant and the mountain station of the Spielboden cableway, which can transport hikers comfortably back down to Saas-Fee.
Alternative A: Spielboden - Längfluh; The path that continues onwards from Spielboden to the Längfluh mountain station is not always open, so please enquire about opening times at the tourist offices or cableway stations. The Längfluh mountain hut serves as the starting point for many glacier hiking trails as well as for climbing the Alphubel (4,206 m a.s.l.). Visitors to the hut are treated to an up-close view of the beautiful and imposing glacier tongues and their impressive ice formations (seracs). (Saas-Fee - Längfluh: 5.5km; 1071 Hm; 3.5h)
