Tour description

This trail starts in the beautiful hamlet of Bidermatten, which, despite its proximity to Tamatten in Saas-Grund, actually belongs to the municipality of Saas-Balen. Bidermatten’s old houses and narrow lanes are still predominantly inhabited, allowing visitors to imagine what life here would have been like in the old days.

The path leads west from the main street right through the middle of this quaint hamlet. After a short while, hikers pass the Biderbach and reach the outer edge of the mountain pasture of Bideralp. Here, the path forks right in the direction of Stafelti. At the Schwarzberg meadow, hikers join the Grächen high-altitude path, which leads over Senggboden and Bärenfalle to Saas-Fee (Wildi).

Above Senggboden lies Spilboden, which, according to local legend, is cursed: “After the natural Mattmark reservoir broke its banks once again, local residents promised not to hold dances there for 40 years. But the young people did not abide by this rule, and danced for three full nights up on Spilboden. As the oil in the lamps burned low, the Devil made the snow catch fire to illuminate their dance floor. Ever since, this area is believed to be cursed…

Alternative A: At the fork in the path on the outer edge of Bideralp, remain on the path and follow it to Bideralp. From here, the path continues over the Biderbach and past Brand to Sengg, where hikers can enjoy a spectacular view of the 4,000-metre peaks above the Kreuzboden area. The trail then continues past Fluh and Waldhotel Fletschhorn, famous for its gourmet cuisine, until it arrives at the outskirts of Saas-Fee. (5.6km / 405/125 Hm / 2.5h)

Alternative B: This alternative route offers a short detour to Sengg. The path leads through the old hamlet of Bidermatten and crosses its beautiful meadows. Shortly after passing the bridge at Tamatten, hikers turn right and follow the steep path up through the woods directly to Sengg. The ascent to Sengg takes around an hour. Hikers can then either continue on to Saas-Fee or return to Saas-Grund. (1.5km / 271/13 Hm / 1h)

Make sure you plan enough time for the hike and be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and good outdoor clothing.

Beware of the Spilboden, it is said to be cursed…
