A hike in the footsteps of history: the trail along the former trade route to Italy leads over old bridges and through an impressive gorge.
If you start this hike from Fiesch, you'll pass the romantic district of Wiler by the bridge (at the “Fieschertal/Bahnhof” turnoff) as you head towards Lax, the actual starting point of the tour. Once there, follow the trail from the Restaurant Bellevue down to the Rhone bridge and climb up to the Wasen on the other side of the valley. The route continues from here on the historic trade route that ran from Grengiols to Binn and onwards to Italy over the Albrun Pass. Begin by hiking towards Hockmatta; after covering about 2 km downhill you'll cross the historic Roman bridge, thought to have been built in the 16th century. From here, the route runs uphill towards the Twingi Gorge, passing by impressive rock formations, tunnels and bridges. Wayside crosses are a constant reminder that this is the most difficult and dangerous part of the former trade route. After crossing the gorge, the final stage of the route leads via a road straight into the mineral village of Binn, where you can catch the PostBus back to Fiesch.
