This circular walk offers absolutely everything: tremendous views of the Schreckhorn group of mountains and the drainage basin of both the Grindelwald glaciers, a deep blue lake in which the majestic Oberland’s peaks of over 4000 metres are reflected, a welcoming mountain hotel from which you can experience the fabulous atmosphere at sunrise and sunset.
From First the path ascends and descends gently to the Bachalpsee. Behind the lake a mule track of national significance leads upwards to the Burgi hut. Passing two refuges on the way you reach Gassenboden. The antique Faulhorn mountain hotel lies merely a few turns further up. The return via Gassenboden through the broad Alpine corrie of Bussalp is relatively steep, and via Oberläger one arrives at the station of the Bussalp bus route where Grindelwald Bus takes you comfortably back to Grindelwald.
Route A: Bachalpsee - Waldspitz - Bort
A unique, world-famous scene unfolds before your very eyes. Bachalpsee in the foreground, the majestic peaks of the Bernese Alps with their eternal ice rising up in the background. A footpath leads between both the Bachalp lakes and turns off to the south shortly afterwards. It leads through marshland of national significance with a variety of bogs and mosses through which the Mühlebach meanders. Along the way there is a varied flora of gentians, spring pasque flower (pulsatilla vernalis), purple gentian, alpine anemone, primroses etc. On the way from Bachläger to Waldspitz a whole see of alpine roses lies at your feet, the red colour shining in contrast to the green of the meadows and the white of the glaciers in the background. From Waldspitz you have the choice between taking Grindelwald Bus back down to Grindelwald or footpaths to either Bort or Bussalp. From Waldpitz mountain restaurant a path leads through alpine roses and blueberry bushes, forest and flower-filled meadows to the Mühlebach waterfalls and on to Bort. From here you can enjoy the ride back to Grindelwald in the comfort of the 6-seater gondola cableway (distance: 8.1km / climb: 135 m).
Route B: Eiger Panorama Path: Bachalpsee – Hireleni – Feld – Bussalp
Along the entire walk you can enjoy the unique panoramic views of the Grindelwald valley and the eternal ice of the Bernese Alps, seven of which are over 4000 metres in height. After a gentle descent to Feld one crosses the Bussalpbach in Bonera before turning, either directly or via Oberläger, towards Bussalp. In the comfort of distinctive Grindelwald Bus you can savour the journey down to the valley. From the point of departure - the unique viewing point First, top station of the modern 6-seater gondola cableway which transports you up from Grindelwald – a leisurely walk takes you to Bachalpsee. The meadows lining the footpath are scattered with flowers amongst which the cows graze with pleasure. The path continues between both Bachalp lakes and then ascends to the Hireleni and the Fernandez refuge behind (distance: 8.2 km / climb: 272 m).
