Fribourg and Laupen, some twenty kilometres apart, have a number of things in common. Build on the banks of the Sarine, both towns were founded for their strategic locations: Laupen on the road leading from La Broye to the middle Aar basin, and Fribourg as the only available crossing over the Sarine, at the frontier of the Bourgon and Germanic empires. The medieval towns also had a kinship in a historical sense: both were dominated by the Zaehringen.
Some surprising discoveries await you along your route.
Fribourg and its bridges, each one a testimony to bold technological constructions, such as the covered wooden bridge, the Les Neigles footbridge, the vertiginous suspension bridge under construction at La Poya, or indeed the bridge at Grandfey.
After the impressive spectacle of the Sarine Crossing, more discoveries await you, such as the Ermitage de la Madeleine, a 121 metre sanctuary built by two hermits, dug out of the Molasse sandstone overlooking the river.
The walk continues along the upper terrace of the artificial lake of Schiffenen, closely resembling a fjord, which swallowed up more than 13 km of valley. The two castles of Grand and Petit Vivy will catch your eye from the other bank of the river. From the heights of the dam at Schiffenen, built in 1963, you’ll descend to its base to rejoin the Sarine and continue your walk along a delightful path following the river’s straight course.
On the high ground at Kleingurmels, take the time to pay your respects to the Au Auriedstäg marshlands, a protected site of national importance which is home to frogs and toads.
After a good five hours of walking, Laupen will at last come into view, and the impressive confluence of the Singine and Sarine rivers.
To take in all the beauty of Fribourg, one must climb the 365 steps leading to the summit of St-Nicholas Cathedral. A flamboyant gothic jewel built between 1283 and 1490 on a rocky spur overlooking the Sarine.
