The Föhn Skate route is an easier alternative to the Rhein Skate route. It leads past famous attractions, such as the medieval town of Werdenberg, and is less exposed to the often strong winds in the Rhine Valley.
The Föhn Skate route is perfect for those who prefer to travel between Trübbach and St. Margrethen, by rolling casually through the pretty villages of Werdenberg and the Rhine Valley, rather than skating on the Rhine dam. The route leads along the foot of the Alpstein region. As soon as Weite, families will find Heuwiese, a beautiful natural paradise with barbecue spots and sanitary facilities.
The birds of prey park in Buchs with over 60 species of daytime and nocturnal birds of prey, the Naturena Experience Farm in Gams with choice regional farm specialities and the tiny world-famous medieval town of Werdenberg, offer a wonderfully varied fringe programme alongside the route.
Why is the Föhn Skate route called Föhn Skate? The warm fall wind can blow very strongly down the Rhine Valley. However, in good weather with no föhn, a strong wind blows up the valley in the afternoons. Adverse winds on the Rhine dam can be a very troublesome. The smart way to avoid this wind is to take the pleasant route through lovely villages and lanes.
You can travel to the starting point by public transport.
