This trail allows hikers to explore a typical, sparse glacial valley full of moraines and interspersed with various species of Alpine flowers and herbs.
The tour starts at the Mattmark dam and leads along the right-hand side of the lake (facing uphill) and up to Schwarzbergalp. From here, the path branches off to the right and follows the road for a while past a hairpin bend near the Schwarzberg stream. Then the trail forks to the left and runs parallel to the crest of the Schwarzberg, passing the Altstafel and the Chäste, until it reaches the Schwarzberg Glacier.
Until the waypoint located at 2,693 m a.s.l. (near the large rock) the path is clearly visible; from this point on the path runs mainly along the crest of the moraine on the right-hand side, and is not clearly marked. Care should be taken, as the glacier tongue is covered with scree in parts and thus unrecognisable as a glacier. The valley invites visitors to bask in the tranquillity of the high-Alpine landscape, formed over millennia of geological activity.
Alternative A: Starting from Schwarzbergalp and after the small stream on the left, this alternative trail sets off in the direction of Schwarzbergchopf. After roughly 2.5 hours of walking, hikers come across a spectacular view over the Allalin Glacier towards the Britannia hut, as well as the area surrounding the Mattmark reservoir. The ascent and descent on this trail includes a section across a rocky ledge.
(Mattmark dam - Schwarzbergalp - Schwarzbergchopf; 3.7km / 665HM)
Pay attention to the Postauto bus timetable.
The second part traverses scree and is only recommended for very sure-footed hikers.
Beware of glacier crevasses – these can still occur on scree-covered glaciers. Please do not take any risks.
Neither of these trails is circular and the same route should be taken back.
