Tracking the world’s longest tunnel
57 kilometres and around 20 minutes separate train travellers from the North and South of Switzerland thanks to the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world’s longest tunnel. But it is more interesting to experience the trail from Erstfeld to Bodio, which lies above it, at walking pace.
Stage 2 Bristen - Sedrun
In order to shorten the second stage a little, you can choose to book a taxi to take you into Etzli Valley from Bristen. From there, the trail winds across two terrain levels to a small plateau which is best viewed from the Etzli cabin. There, a lovely coffee with a slice of cake awaits you, or even a hearty soup for lunch, enhanced by stunning all-round views of the surrounding granite mountains. In order to relax completely, you can also stay the night here and enjoy the starry sky while tucking into a hotpot. Stopping over makes sense because from now on it all gets a bit more Alpine. On the mountain trail to Chrüzlipass at an altitude of 2347 metres, you again cross the tunnel trajectory. It’s worth lingering at the pass. The mighty Oberalpstock rises up in the East. Time to say goodbye to the Alpine world of Uri. Because you are now entering Surselva in Graubünden.
Attention: due to a mountainslide the route further down is closed. Take route D via Alp Caschlé down to Sedrun with its healthful spa and swimming pool Bogn Sedrun and wealth of accommodation options.
Variant A: When you have spend the night in Golzern you go down with the gondola to Bristen and from there onwards by foot.
Variant B: TIPP an overnightstay in the Etzli cabin including Hotpot.
Variant C: via Mittelplatten and Val Mila (T3)
Attention: due to a mountainslide the route over the Chrüzlipass via Val Strem is closed. Take route C: via Mittelplatten and Val Mila. (T3) only after mid July because of snow!
route D: via Chrüzlipass and Alp Caschlé +1 hour.
Attention: In winter from midd october till midd june this trail is covered with snow. In Summer it is also possible to pass through snowfields. Inform yourself before you start your tour.
