Tracking the world’s longest tunnel
57 kilometres and around 20 minutes separate train travellers from the North and South of Switzerland thanks to the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world’s longest tunnel. But it is more interesting to experience the trail from Erstfeld to Bodio, which lies above it, at walking pace.
Stage 5 Carì - Bodio
The final stage of the Gotthard Tunnel Trail essentially follows the Strada Alta Leventina, one of Switzerland’s oldest mountain passes. For a long time, it was somewhat forgotten. However, it has gained new significance because its course fairly closely follows the tunnel’s trajectory. And it has lost none of its charm: tightly-packed mountain villages consisting of rustic houses alternate with resin-scented forests; elegant little churches are planted on top of the most beautiful hilltops with breathtaking views. Those walking in autumn will find sweet chestnuts. In every season, you are accompanied by gorgeous views deep into the Leventina Valley from Airolo to Biasca. Shortly before Biasca, the Strada Alta descends along romantic paths to reach the valley floor almost immediately beside the southern portal of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. There, trains shoot out of the tunnel tubes, completing their journey from North to South in less than half an hour. For the hikers, it has been a very different experience: they have spent five days drinking in the light, hiking nearly 100 km through gorgeous mountain scenery, climbing 5600 m and rediscovering the Gotthard region.
