Tour description

Commercial use of the Swiss woods should be decreased. An accord between the federal government and the cantonal forestry officials aims to keep ten percent of the forest area as nature reserve. In December, the Weid forest reserve in the Klosterwald between Bollingen and Schmerikon will be inaugurated. This presents a good opportunity to hike along the stretch from Rapperswil-Jona to Schmerikon via the Bollgner Seerücken.

You take the train to Blumenau, and then hike along the shore to Wurmsbach. At the monastery you go north. At the southwest end of the Buch industrial zone you'll see that nature produced by man can also be very beautiful. This is the outdoor workshop of the landscape architect and star gardener Enzo Enea. We can recommend a visit to his magnificent, 75,000 square meter site (admission CHF 15.00, closed Sundays).

You'll cross a field to the Oberwald, victim of two severe storms in the last twelve years. At the Risi rest area you won't take the official hiking trail but rather a path in the westerly direction. After a few steps you'll find yourself standing beside a hole of 10 meters depth, created by the wearing away of sandstone. On the Moos, crossed by the hiking trail of the Bollingen-Wagen pass route, you arrive at the western end of the Weid forest reserve. In March the two long moors between Moos and Katzenriet are still colorless. In just a few weeks, however, butterflies will flit over brilliant green grass and colorful blossoms. The reserve is not yet finished, for the closely spaced trees need to be thinned out so that oaks, beeches and firs can receive more light for optimal growth. In several places wood is being cut for the last time. It will be several decades before the Klosterwald will look the way it did during the Stone Age, when the first settlers arrived in the upper lake region. It's worth visiting right now though! The hike between Blumenau and Schmerikon is very varied and at the end the Seehof in Schmerikon beckons two more reasons for a visit now.

Return: Train or bus from Schmerikon
