This challenging itinerary is recommended for expert cyclists as it follows mostly narrow and busy main roads in breathtaking natural surroundings. Start in Locarno and go through the large roundabout in Piazza Castello, at the edge of the old town center (Città Vecchia), following the signs for Centovalli/Vallemaggia. In Ponte Brolla, turn left and cross the bridge towards Centovalli Valley. Continue on the main road, passing several typical villages. In Camedo cross the border into Italy and continue until the village of Malesco. In Malesco turn left and ascend the challenging and undeveloped Cannobina Valley. Make sure you are extra cautious on the long and steep descent from Finero to Cannobio. Once you reach the town of Cannobio, turn left toward Brissago/Locarno. Continue on the coastal road, crossing back into Switzerland and passing Brissago and Porto Ronco until you reach Ascona. Go through the pedestrian piazza of Ascona and continue on back roads, following the official SwitzerlandMobility signs until you reach the Lido Locarno swimming complex.
Recommended period: April-October
Warning: the roads on this itinerary are mostly busy and narrow main roads. The descent from Finero to Cannobio is very steep and winding in some places. Be very careful.
