This rather challenging itinerary takes you from Lake Maggiore deep into Valle Onsernone, one of the most picturesque and untamed valleys in Canton Ticino.
Starting from the Locarno town center, cross the footbridge over the Maggia River and reach Ascona. In the area known as San Materno, head toward Losone and continue on the main road to Golino. Just past the center of Golino, turn right and descend toward the „Ponte dei Cavalli“ bridge, where you can enjoy a nice view of the Isorno River gorges and the Centovallina train bridge. Continue until Cavigliano and take the main road into Valle Onsernone. The road alternates between steep parts (such as the initial stretch), smoother parts, and some downhill sections. It is worth making a short stop at some of the typical villages on the way. Past Russo, the road descends until the «Ponte Oscuro» bridge. Cross the bridge and continue straight ahead ascending toward Comologno/Spruga, where the main road ends at an altitude of 1105 meters.
The route largely follows main roads (beware of traffic) and requires being in good physical condition.
As an alternative to the Ascona-Losone-Cavigliano stretch, instead of following the main road you can take the bicycle route along the Maggia and Melezza Rivers (mostly dirt road).
Points of interest:
Piazza Grande/Old town (Locarno), Castle San Materno Museum (Ascona), Museum Onsernonese and mill (Loco), Atelier Pagliarte (Berzona), Palazzo Gamboni (Comologno), Bagni di Craveggia (ruins with hot spring, 2,5 km passed the village of Spruga)
Variante A: Locarno (Largo Zorzi) - Maggia river footbridge - Losone - Losone (Golf Gerre) - Tegna footbridge - Verscio - Cavigliano - Auressio - Loco - Berzona - Mosogno - Russo - «Ponte Oscuro» bridge - Crana - Comologno - Spruga
Recommended period: April - October
Pay particular attention to traffic on the stretch of road between Losone and Golino. The road through Valle Onsernone is rather narrow and winding. Be especially careful on the descent back.
