Tour description

In Maloja, the trail takes you left past the post office, close to the studio of artist Giovanni Segantini, up to the «Marmitte dei Gigant» (devil's cauldrons) moulins and to the Belvedere Tower. Behind the tower, the route continues along the Sentiero Storico down into the Bregaglia Valley. It is still possible to see the tracks left by the ancient Romans, who used this pass in their day. From the path through the woods and meadows, you can occasionally catch a glimpse of the hairpin bends on the Maloja Pass road, the Bregaglia Valley or Piz Badile. After about 30 minutes, you will reach the pass road, where there is a bus stop. The route continues along the main road, past the ruins of the Church of San Gaudenzio, and on to Casaccia. This village at the foot of the pass road was once an important centre on the major trade routes. From Casaccia, you walk across a beautiful flower-strewn meadow and across the bridge over the River Maira. Follow the river and in an hour you will reach Roticcio, where there is a fantastic view of the valley and the village of Vicosoprano. You now face a steady climb to Durbegia. If you are lucky, the little kiosk will be open and you can fortify yourself with a slice of chestnut cake. The trail continues across meadows and through deciduous woodland high above the valley to the quaint little village of Soglio. The view of the Bregaglia granite mountains and the Bondasca mountain range becomes increasing spectacular, until suddenly you find yourself in Soglio. Be sure to pay a visit to the Palazzo Salis and enjoy the beautiful vista from the picturesque little church.
