Walensee Mühlehorn

Walensee Mühlehorn

Tour description

For a bike tour from Bad Ragaz to Rapperswil-Jona one has a great choice of bike and tour types. It's a trip of 70 exciting kilometers, about two hours on a racing bike. On a mountain bike and with a few side trips, it becomes an all day excursion. Sitting up straighter on a touring bike than on a racing bike, one needs up to four hours. Or one can opt for the fourth choice and take a Stromer of the Swiss brand Thoemus for a test run. These bikes, which usually leave the competition way behind, are the latest mobile craze. «How fast do they go? How long does the battery last? How do they work?»

One answers these questions by riding a Stromer. Surely this bike created an impression on those bikers it overtook at 25 km/hour on the steep climb up the Mühlehorn. For inspiration for this tour, consult the guide «Veloland Ostschweiz» (published by Pro Velo, Werd Verlag). Start with Tour number 5 (Churfirsten) between Bad Ragaz and Uznach, and add on a stretch to Rapperswill-Jona. Take the train to Bad Ragaz. In the Rhein and Seez valleys one rides on side roads and field tracks practically traffic free. No need for the map, as the many Veloland signposts point the way.

The most spectacular stretch is that between Walenstadt and Weesen. One rides along the shore and is treated to wonderful views: steep shorelines, the petrol-blue to opal-green Walensee and above all, the cliffs of the Churfirsten. Hint: the shore path is closed on Saturday afternoon and Sundays. Caution is needed on this route, as the path is frequently narrow and hidden from view. For those in a hurry, the bike lane on the main road is a better choice.

Riding the Stromer, one can set off in Bad Ragaz at 10.30 a.m. and be in Rapperswil-Jona at noon (an average of more than 40 km/h is possible on the Stromer). You can, however, enjoy the many tourist attractions. In Gäsi you can make a side trip to the south and see the re-naturalized Escher Canal. You can also add a few kilometers and stop for lunch at the «Lago Mio» in its attractive setting between Weesen and Betlis.
It's also worthwhile stopping at the Kaltbrunner Riet and the Schmerkner Seequai, for here the «Baristalina» serves first-class espresso and prosecco in her ApePiaggio. In the evening one eats supper in the lush garden of the Hof Restaurant in Oberbollingen. It is then only a few kilometers to the destination in the old part of Rapperswil.
