The via ferrata on the Mittaghorn offers hikers a simple yet scenic tour and is also suitable for beginners. This tour allows via ferrata enthusiasts to climb an incredible 3,000-metre mountain and be rewarded for their efforts once they reach the summit of the Mittaghorn, with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Saas Valley and its 4,000-metre peaks.
Please be aware that even though the tour is in the easy category, it still takes a full day to complete. Please only attempt this via ferrata when reliable good weather is forecast, and please be aware that in early summer you may still encounter some snow fields. This tour can also be hiked as a round trail from the Britannia mountain hut.
The tour starts at Morenia by the mountain station for the first section of the Alpin Express and leads in a north-easterly direction to the west ridge of the Mittaghorn. After walking for one and a half hours, hikers reach the beginning of the via ferrata that leads up and over the ridge to the summit (around two hours). From the Mittaghorn summit the via ferrata continues east along a steep and rocky path that leads over the Wandflue to Plattjen. Hikers can then return to Saas-Fee on the Plattjen gondola lift.
Pay attention to the cableway timetable.
Make sure you plan enough time for the hike and be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and good outdoor clothing.
Ask at the mountain guide offices about any additional particularities of the route and please take a guide if you have no previous experience with via ferratas.
