The magnificent panoramic view is just one of the reasons why this route is so popular. It's sometimes said that the journey is the destination, and that's certainly true here. Prepare yourself for an absolutely beautiful winter hike.
Starting from Riederalp, ride the glacier lift to the Moosfluh, one of the three impressive viewpoints in the Aletsch Arena. Overwhelmed by the view of the Great Aletsch Glacier and the wintry 4,000-metre peaks of the Valais Alps, hike westwards along the mountain ridge and downhill to the Breitebode. From here, the wonderful winter hiking trail follows the Härdernagrat ridge all the way to the Hohfluh chairlift mountain station. The panoramic view of the unique natural landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site on the right and the sun plateau and 4,000-metre peaks of Valais on the left now follow you throughout the next section of the route, which leads downhill to Riederfurka. Here you'll pass the imposing Villa Cassel, which is closed during the winter months. The final stage of the route is a leisurely descent to Riederalp, which you'll reach after about 30 minutes.
Because of the altitude and route of this winter hike, good footwear is absolutely essential.
