Niederwald is one of the most traditional villages with outstanding character and charm in the Goms region. A monument in the village square commemorates Cesar Ritz who was born in the small mountain village and was later called the «king of hoteliers and hotelier to kings»by the British King Edward VII. The snowshoe trail first takes you over open terrain to the hamlet of Furacher. Then the trail rises not too steeply for two kilometres through the snowy winter forest to the village of Bellwald which is situated high up above the Rhone valley on a sunny plateau affording panoramic views. It is definitely worthwhile taking a walk through the old part of the village before taking the aerial cable car back down to Fürgangen or walking back to Niederwald. From Fürgangen, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train takes you back to Niederwald.
