A hike through an area of geographical interest in the border region between the Cantons of Bern and Solothurn. The route leads through delightful natural landscapes and to impressive technical structures. Thanks to a large number of tunnels, the high-speed Bahn 2000 railway track fits quite harmoniously into the undulating landscape of Oberaargau. The crowning glory is the small medieval town of Wangen an der Aare. Few hard surfaces outside the towns and villages.
Follow the tracks northwards from Herzogenbuchsee station and cross below them after 300 m. Passing by the huge commercial buildings of the industrial area, one reaches the nature trail that runs over the wooded Önzberg. At this point one crosses a key section of Bahn 2000, as the newly built double-track line is linked underground to the reactivated line to Solothurn without a crossing. On the way one encounters several information boards on the railway discovery trail created by SBB, with information about the major project behind the Mattstetten-Rothrist high-speed line.
Passing through the village of Inkwil, one reaches the small but delightful Inkwilersee. On the northern shore of the lake, the trail crosses into the Canton of Solothurn for a few dozen metres. The route continues on a slight upward slope along forest tracks and across the fields to Wangenried. Shortly before this little village, there is a clear view of the wide Aare Valley and the Jura mountain chain beyond. Continuing across meadows and up a steep forest path, one finally reaches Wangen an der Aare. The ten-minute detour from the station to the historic centre of this little town by the Aare with its clock tower and covered wooden bridge is an interesting end to the hike. Founded by the Kyburgs, the town was used by the Bernese as a lucrative bailiwick. The opulent castle near the covered wooden bridge, now home to the district administration office, bears witness to this fact.
