The trek can start from Brione Verzasca (758 meters above sea level), following the road to Val Osola. After an hour and a half, leave the road and take the easy, flat trail which winds mainly through forested areas and leads to the Osola hut.
A walk of about two hours takes you to the hut, which is at an altitude of 1,418 meters. The hut affords an excellent opportunity for rest and refreshment and an overnight stay (it sleeps 18).
A steeper trail runs from the Osola hut which, after a walk of about an hour and a half, leads to the Corte del Fornée at an altitude of 1,697 meters.
Follow the trail to Bocchetta Canova, which takes about an hour and a half on foot. That is where the trail leads down towards the Spluga hut in Vallemaggia (45 minutes.).
If you don’t want to come back to the Verzasca Valley, you can also continue on towards the bottom of Vallemaggia towards Giumaglio (3 hours).
Points of interest:
- The Church of Brione with its frescoes, the Osola river;
- Monte Zucchero and the Froda waterfall just before Sonogno (Alternative A)
Alternative A: Osola Hut – Sonogno (distance: 12.5 km / altitude difference: 1,100 hm)
One interesting alternate route would be to stay on the Verzasca side. Walk towards Sonogno from the Osola hut, passing through the Bocchetta di Mügaia at an altitude of 2,518 meters above sea level (at the foot of Monte Zucchero, which is 2,735 meters above sea level) and then continue on along the Val Redorta to Sonogno, which takes six and a half hours.
Alternative B: Spluga Hut - Costa - Arnau - Berzona - Giumaglio
