Pre-alpine hike of medium difficulty, mostly meadows and unpaved roads, with plenty of vantage points.
From the village plaza we take the steep trail up through Bergli and Chirnenberg to the Alp Wielesch, where there is a summer restaurant. Here we take time for the beautiful view over the Linth area, Lake Zurich and the alps of Canton Schwyz. It’s a somewhat easier hike through Breitenau to the Alp Oberbächen with its lovely playground. The restaurant is open as long as the cows are on the alp. We marvel at the breathtaking view from the hilly Toggenburg to Lake Constance and the Alpstein. Our trail descends to Unterbächen and through Müslen – Eich to Ebnat-Kappel.
Ebnat-Kappel is a combined community made up of the towns of Ebnat and Kappel. Ebnat was called Ober-Wattwil until 1762. In contrast to Wattwil, inhabited chiefly by St. Gall Chlysten, Ober-Wattwil residents were mostly the courtiers of the Toggenburg count. It was the cotton industry that brought the necessary upswing.
