Magnificent views of two glaciers, a route that demands sure-footed endurance and an SAC hut as a rewarding destination make this route an impressive high mountain hike.
The first part of the trail is a gentle walk along a forest road from the Riederalp cable car station to Riederfurka. Here you will find the first highlight of the tour: the Pro Natura Centre, housed in the imposing Villa Cassel. There's still a long way to go, though, so you shouldn't spend too long visiting the exhibition or the Alpine garden. The next section of the route leads downhill from Riederfurka to the Grünsee lake with a view of the Great Aletsch Glacier, then across the impressive suspension bridge to the other side of the valley and the Aletschji mountain pastures. After the following ascent via the “Leng Acker” to the chapel and onwards via the connecting path to the Oberaletsch panorama trail (past the Belalp on the left hand side), you'll be rewarded with fantastic views that stay with you as the hike continues: the spectacular Oberaletsch panorama trail certainly lives up to its name. The path runs through the Oberaletsch Gorge amid the Alpine terrain, then upwards along the Oberaletsch Glacier on the right side of the valley to 2,640 m above sea level where you'll find your destination, the Oberaletsch SAC Hut.
The tour duration is calculated for the outward journey. Overnight accommodation in the hut is recommended (advance booking required).
Special features: stamina, sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential.
