This tour is suitable for all bikers who are not afraid of a steep ascent of 1000 metres in altitude. Afterwards you can enjoy the trail that leads as a cross connection to San Romerio.
The ascent starts right at the end of the village of Poschiavo and goes towards Cologna. The piece to the hamlet of Cansumé is not really demanding and ideal for all those who want to get used to the altitude step by step. The difference in altitude on the narrow asphalted street is about 600 m. The view from Cansumé lasts over wide parts of the valley’s west flank and its peaks: Cresti da Vartegna, Piz Cancian with Pizzo Scalino in the background, Corno Campascio and Piz Varuna. At the turn in front of the Alpine huts you leave the asphalted road in order to continue first on the natural road and then on the mule track towards Gügliel and Balegna. This is where the gravel path starts that leads to the highlight of the tour: Sclupetoir 1906 metres above sea level. You really should make a short break at the small group of Alpine huts and enjoy the view from above over the valley. The trail continues downhill on a natural road. At the end of this road, on the left side, another path starts and leads directly to San Romerio. On this section the tour is quite stony and can be slippery with wet conditions. After a short visit of the picturesque little church of San Romerio and after having eaten some delicious specialities of Valposchiavo in the refuge right next to it, a natural road brings you to Piaz. During the descent you have to be very careful because the road was built hanging over the lake. The tour continues on asphalt. After about one kilometre towards Viano you turn right towards Garbela above Selvaplana. You leave Garbela, a nice residential area of the municipality of Brusio, to follow the path to Miralago. There the very brave can take a refreshing bath in the clear water of Lake of Poschiavo, the others may enjoy the terrace of the restaurant Miralago with a view like on the panoramic postcards. Afterwards you bike along the lake, go through Le Prese and get back to Poschiavo. The tour ends with an easy, flat piece.
San Romerio: The alp San Romerio with the little church of the same name is situated close to the sky and close to a rocky abyss. The chapel was consecrated in the year 1106, but it also has structural elements of younger epochs and belongs nowadays to the diocese of Tirano in Valtellina, Italy. Pilgrimage and the traditional celebration to the honour of Holy Remigius take annually place on the last Sunday in July. The vernacular says that who goes entirely around the small church once, would be released from his/her diseases and plagues forever – because the fatal fall down into the distant valley would be guaranteed ... San Romerio offers the hiker a captivating view of the lake, of the upper and lower valley of Poschiavo and of Valtellina.
