Panoramic view to the Linthebene and the Zürichsee

Tour description

Pre-alpine hike of medium difficulty, with steep climb.

We first find mention of Schänis in 800. The former Holy Cross convent, built in 814, was one of the major consecrated buildings in Switzerland. It was closed in 1811. The renovated abbey church of St. Sebastian houses marvelous old treasures. The Gallusturm, the only round tower from Roman times in Switzerland, is also worth a visit, as are the former town hall, built in 1784, and the Seliner and Steiner houses.

From the village plaza, we hike past the village fountain to Ledi and enjoy the shade in the Ledi woods, for the steep climb makes us break out in a sweat. We cross the Rappenbach and the Ramisbach and walk along the Forststrasse to the Grütwald. Shortly before we leave the woods, near Untermatt, we follow the Dörflerbergstrasse up to the Gleiterbach. Below us, to our left, lies the broad, flat country of the Linth region, broken only by the Benken Büchel. We climb up to the Alp Unter Bogmen on a good trail and then to the magnificent outlook at Ober Bogmen, where we can enjoy a complete panorama: the peaks of Glarus and the «Innerschwyz» as well as the villages in the Linth region. To the east rises the Speer, further south the Federispitz.
A delightful hike along a ridge brings us to the Obere Steinegg and to Oberhaghöchi. In the spring the meadows here are covered with crocuses. Our trail continues on to Altwisstock, and then comes the steep descent to the Altwis. And then through the woods to Cholschlagen, where we cross the deep Steinenbachtobel. Along the Zinggenberg runs our trail to the Fahrstrasse, on which we reach the sunny terrace of Rieden. A short walk around the village brings us to the neo-baroque parish church of St. Magnus, built in 1912.
