Tour description

This themed circuit itinerary, with its starting and finishing point at Novaggio, offers a string of fascinating glimpses into the heritage of a place where men lived and struggled for countless generations. The structures that grew out of the need to survive, first allowed the local population to grow their essential foods and then permitted them to begin to trade. The route unwinds along the Magliasina stream. From the village’s parking area you follow the signs, passing on the lower side of the village and continuing on along via Vinéra. Once you reach the last of the houses, go down the valley taking the road supported by dry- stone walls and arrive at the restored Vinéra mill. The dry-stone walls circumscribed the ancient road linking Novaggio to Miglieglia, a little village located further down the valley. After leaving Vinéra mill, cross a pretty little wooden bridge and climb until a crossing with a route to Casé. Mining exploration was undertaken here in 1918, following a vein of quartz and antimonite, but the lack of results led to a rapid cessation of the work. Continuing onwards, you reach Tinevalle, where metallic mineral veins were exploited prior to working being suspended in 1919. Not far from Tinevalle you find the Baglioni and Franzi mines, which contain small quantities of gold and silver. Next along the path is what remains of Miglieglia castle, part of an ancient fortification network; you’ll also discover some terraced fields where people used to grow rye. The path carries on towards the Aranno mallet, used in the working of large pieces of iron. Begin your return journey here. You can still visit the Monda mine, the Aranno mills and go back down toward the Magliasina river to stop at the so-called “ponte di Aranno” mine. Last stop before reaching the end of the trail is the Castello furnace, before finally arriving back in Novaggio.
