The «Sentiero Smeraldo» (Emerald Trail) is a project of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) realised in co-operation with the office of tourism as part of Switzerland’s «Emerald Network». Its goal is to publicise and raise awareness about the Emerald species and habitats of Mendrisiotto – one of three places in the canton of Ticino richest in these rare and endangered species and habitats.
From Bellavista there are two different possibilities for planning the rest of your itinerary, depending on which end of the «Sentiero Smeraldo» (Emerald Trail) you head for. If you want to go directly back to Mendrisio, then this route is ideal. If you still want to see Arogno, Caprino and Lugano (we recommend you plan on an extra day for this), then choose route 8. From Bellavista, follow the zig-zag path through the forest to Cragno. To Salorino it is about the same distance again. However, the trail is mostly downhill and it is an easy walk. The many beautiful sights of nature along the way are sure to make you forget the time. In the final stretch you’ll pass through Corteglia and get to know the agglomeration of Mendrisio. Mendrisio itself has an abundance of culture and art to offer.
