Tour description

From Colico catch the A-10 bus to Delebio or you can get to Delebio by the cycling and walking track from the Trivio bridge, in the Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve. In Delebio walk through the village to the Basalone area. That’s where where the starting point of the Gran Via delle Orobie (GVO) is. The GVO is the most important excursion route in the Orobie Valtellinesi Regional Park. It is a high trail (1800 metres above sea level) more than 130 km long from Andalo, in the Lesina Valley, to Aprica. From the more elevated portion of the village walk to the Basalone (Basalùn) area, easily found because of the electric plant. Some 250 metres from the plant’s entrance you will see a parking lot where directions to the Monte Legnone can be found. Take the cobblestone road climbing steeply into a shady chestnut, black locusts and fern forest, where mushrooms are abundant. The cobblestone mule track is a typical “öga”, as concave-section tracks were called.

Past the Piazzo Minghino artificial lake (532 m) follow the sign to Obiccio di Sopra. The road, slightly steeper than the previous one, will take you to the lovely Ossiccio di Sotto May pasture. Walk through the meadows to the left of the stone farmsteads until you get to Ossiccio di Sopra (922 m). You will find the Ossiccio di Sopra May pasture interesting for several reasons. From its scenic location and the Bible frescoes painted on its houses between 1995 and 1996 by painter and sculptor G. Abram to the two chestnut-sheds, or metati, were chestnuts were traditionally dried.

The path enters a beech wood until Piana, near a local main road. You can take an easier way if you cut left from the road on a mule track and follow the signs to the Alpe Casello pasture. After approx 1 km you will get to the detour to the Alpe Legnone pasture where you will get back to the GVO. Follow the signs to the Alpe Legnone and walk up along a small defile to the farmstead of Piazza Calda (1165 m). By the palisade you will enter a silent and thick forest of firs and beeches. The track is at first very steep but then flattens out as it cuts across steep silver fir areas. After walking shortly on a flat stretch, the Mottala dei Larici (1395), you will get to a wider mule track leading up to the Casera delle Piode cheesefarm (1501 m). Looking south from the Monte Legnone hut towards the north-eastern Legnone wall you will be able to spot the First World War military track that was part of a system of fortifications that was to be a back up defense line if the Stelvio line gave in. Here you have an impressively open view from Lake Como to the high Valtellina. The view is impeded only on the western side by the imposing profile of the Monte Legnone. Towards south east the Valle Lesina lies in all its width.

Additional information: Gran Via delle Orobie

Please note: in summer start your excursion early. You will be able to walk uphill in the forest with relatively cool temperatures.

Route description: Orobie Valtellinesi Regional Park.

Environment, NATURA2000, Protected areas

The trail is entirely included in the territory of the Orobie Valtellinesi Regional Park. The Orobic Alps are the first mountain range you will meet travelling north from the Po Plain. The Orobic Alps span the Bergamo, Brescia, Lecco, and Sondrio provinces. The southern slope is gentler and the valley morphology is more intricate and diversified. The northern slope, in the Valtellina, drops more steeply down to the Adda river, with deep and roughly parallel glens. The Orobie Valtellinesi Park is situated on the northern side, in the Valtellina. The park’s upper boundary coincides with the border of Sondrio province, on a west to east direction along the Mount Legnone watershed to the Aprica Pass; the lower boundary lies at at an elevation of approximately 1000 m amsl.

In the park’s territory you will also walk across the Val Lesina Natura 2000 site.

WWF’s tips for hikers

Plan each stage carefully, purchase a 1:25000 map, use light but sturdy equipment (hiking boots, rain cape, binoculars…). Be sure to carry a small supply of water and food. We suggest you taste local food (possibly organic) at resting places and restaurants.
Do not litter, do not pick up flowers or rocks and in no way disturb the local fauna. It is unsafe for inexperienced hikers to leave the marked trails and it may cause disturbance to wildlife.
