This trail coincides with the Gran Via delle Orobie (GVO), the most important excursion route in the Orobie Valtellinesi Park. It is a 130 km high-altitude trail (1800 m amsl) from Andalo in the Lesina valley, to Aprica.
From the Mount Legnone hut (1690 m amsl) ignore the path leading up to the Legnone gap and take instead the mule track to the north-eastern amphitheatre of Mount Legnone. Leave the craggy cliff behind and descend the narrow hairpin bends to the Cappello pasture (1521m amsl), keeping well above the pasture huts and in full view of the Baitone (“the Big Hut”) (1640 m amsl), protected by a large avalanche fence.
A second climb will take you up and across the Pizzo Val Torta incline (1898 m amsl) only to descend again to the Casera Luserna cheese farm (1522 m amsl), in the middle of the glacial amphitheatre at the feet of the Pizzo Alto peak (2512 m amsl). Walk along the mid-altitude trail for a relatively long time until you get to the Casera del Dosso, another cheese farm, at 1513 amsl, where you can find facilities for spending the night.
Trail description: Orobie Valtellinesi Regional Park
Environment, NATURA2000, Protected areas
The trail is entirely included in the territory of the Orobie Valtellinesi Regional Park. The Orobic Alps are the first mountain range you will meet travelling north from the Po Plain. The Orobic Alps span the Bergamo, Brescia, Lecco, and Sondrio provinces. The southern slope is gentler and the valley morphology is more intricate and diversified. The northern slope, in the Valtellina, drops more steeply down to the Adda river, with deep and roughly parallel glens. The Orobie Valtellinesi Park is situated on the northern side, in the Valtellina. The park’s upper boundary coincides with the border of Sondrio province, on a west to east direction along the Mount Legnone watershed to the Aprica Pass; the lower boundary lies at at an elevation of approximately 1000 m amsl. WWF’s tips for hikers
Plan each stage carefully, purchase a 1:25000 map, use light but sturdy equipment (hiking boots, rain cape, binoculars…). Be sure to carry a small supply of water and food. We suggest you taste local food (possibly organic) at resting places and restaurants.
Do not litter, do not pick up flowers or rocks and in no way disturb the local fauna. It is unsafe for inexperienced hikers to leave the marked trails and it may cause disturbance to wildlife.
