Tour description

This trail coincides with the Gran Via delle Orobie (GVO), the most important excursion route in the Orobie Valtellinesi Park. It is a 130 km high-altitude trail (1800 m amsl) from Andalo in the Lesina valley, to Aprica.

Trail description
With the farmsteads a few metres below you, walk eastwards from the Alpe Dosso Hut through the woods until you reach the secluded Casera Stavello cheese farm (1551 m amsl). The walk along the Lesina Valley pastures will take you to the Casera di Mezzana cheese farm (1430 m amsl).
Walk down to the little bridge over the stream. Follow the signs and take the narrow path cutting across the long western flank of the Olano (m. 2267) and dei Galli (2217 m amsl) peaks. The track is not always clearly marked and may require a little extra attention. During the trek you will cross the Tremina and Pescia valleys. Fixed ropes will help you on the more exposed sections. From here you will walk up to the Piazza alpine pasture (1844 m), a scenic area where you can give one last look at the valley you are about to leave or admire the Rhaetic Alps right in front of you. After that walk down, in a north-eastern direction, to the Alpe Tagliata.

From the Alpe Tagliata (1573 m) make a right (south-eastern) turn up a gentle incline into a suggestive fir forest on the northern slope of the Pizzo dei Galli. You will get to the Valle di Cosio (also known as Val Giotta) which you will cross on an up-and-down trail to a scenic point on the Alpe Olano pasture (1702 m), clearly marked by a cross and characterized by a lovely pond. From there walk upwards to the Casera di Olano cheese farm (1792 m) in the hollow at the feet of the Olano Peak. Follow the trail on the eastern ridge of the Cima della Rosetta to the Baita del Prato farmstead (1715 m). You are now in the Val Gerola on a large hump leading down, and north-east, from conspicuous Cima della Rosetta (2142 m). From there you will end your day trip at the Bar Bianco Hut (1510 m), situated at the lower boundary of the vast Alpe Culino pastures, in a typical wide-open Alpine location.

Note: in the area of the Val Pescia pass please pay attention to an exposed stretch, equipped with fixed ropes. Mountaineering route difficulty.

Trail description: Orobie Valtellinesi Regional Park

Environment, NATURA2000, Protected areas

The trail is entirely included in the territory of the Orobie Valtellinesi Regional Park. The Orobic Alps are the first mountain range you will meet travelling north from the Po Plain. The Orobic Alps span the Bergamo, Brescia, Lecco, and Sondrio provinces. The southern slope is gentler and the valley morphology is more intricate and diversified. The northern slope, in the Valtellina, drops more steeply down to the Adda river, with deep and roughly parallel glens. The Orobie Valtellinesi Park is situated on the northern side, in the Valtellina. The park’s upper boundary coincides with the border of Sondrio province, on a west to east direction along the Mount Legnone watershed to the Aprica Pass; the lower boundary lies at at an elevation of approximately 1000 m amsl.

In the park’s territory you will also walk across the Val Lesina Natura 2000 site.

WWF’s tips for hikers

Plan each stage carefully, purchase a 1:25000 map, use light but sturdy equipment (hiking boots, rain cape, binoculars…). Be sure to carry a small supply of water and food. We suggest you taste local food (possibly organic) at resting places and restaurants.
Do not litter, do not pick up flowers or rocks and in no way disturb the local fauna. It is unsafe for inexperienced hikers to leave the marked trails and it may cause disturbance to wildlife.
