This walk starts at the Rapperswil railway station. Go through the railway underpass and a few minutes later you’ll already be at the beginning of the attractive wooden walkway. The filigree wooden construction is perfect for observing the rich flora and fauna in this protected natural area. The late Gothic chapel of Unsere Liebe Frau is the terminus of this half-hour walk.
This region was not unknown to the many travelers from the north who knew Lake Zurich and Rapperswil as a stop on their way to Santiago de Compostela, on the route of St. James. A rickety, torturous wooden bridge with loose boards helped them across the lake. Since the 19th century a dam with a road has allowed the traveler to cross at the narrowest point between Rapperswil and Hurden. But the wooden bridge has not been forgotten, and in April 2001 a 841 meter long modern wooden walkway was opened on the site of the old footbridge. Walking across it is an adventure, as one finds oneself in the middle of the lake and at the same time feels solidly connected with both shores. On the Rappeerswil shore the little pilgrims’ park is an inviting place to stop and picnic.
