A gradual but persistent decline is unfortunately underway in terms of natural diversity. Yet there are still natural havens that offer a habitat for butterflies and rare flowers. One of these islands is the Cholgruebe/Stoffelberg-Allmi area above Leissigen, located directly on the high-level Panorama Trail above Lake Thun.
The hike starts at the postbus terminus in Aeschiried. The Panorama Trail leads gently down a terraced slope with superb views to Hellbode, then up an alp road to Ufem Viertel. Mostly in forest, it then descends gently towards Chüngstuel. Above Leissigen village you enjoy wonderful distant views of the Niederhorn and almost the whole of Lake Thun. The trail then leads easily downhill to the hanging bridge over the Spissibach stream. Some 15 minutes after the bridge you reach Stoffelberg-Allmi, where the mountain trail branches off towards Brunni. However it’s well worth hiking up a few more metres to admire the stunning cultural landscape.
One of the last sights worth seeing stands next to the Restaurant Finel on the way down from Meielisalp to Leissigen: the Hodler Memorial, with wonderful views of Lake Thun. This was where in 1904, Ferdinand Hodler painted the first work in his series “Landscapes on Lake Thun”.
The annual Cultural Landscape Award is presented to particularly beautiful and valuable cultural landscapes in the Oberland Ost region. Through support and image cultivation on the part of tourism, the award is intended to give farmers a small incentive to continue sustainable management and thus contribute to preserving the beauty of our natural world.
