Tour description

There are 7 alpeggi around Bellinzona, but not many of them sell cheese. Alpeggio Giumello for example, is where the apprentice cheesemakers learn. These students come from the agricultural school - Istituto Agrario di Mezzana, but the cheese they make is not for sale.
However the following itineraries both take you to alpeggi where it is possible to buy cheese. You can get to Alpe Gesero (Variante A) by car. Leave Bellinzona and head towards val Mesolcina as far as Roveredo (8km) and turn off to Monti di Laura and continue for another 13 kms. Capanna Gesero is well signed and you’ll find the alpeggio in close proximity to it. In this splendid scenery they produce an excellent cheese made of cows’ milk, with ‘GESERO’ marked on the rind. There are also formaggini and buttermilk available. It’s a wonderful place for hiking – Capanna Gesero offers hospitality for anyone who would like to stay longer than a day. There are 60 beds, and a warden from 15th June until 15th October (tel: 091 827 12 71) It’s advisable to make the return trip by car.

The second route leaves from Monte-Carasso. Take the cable car to the top (1400m) and then go to the right and follow the signed path which climbs up to Mornera (about 15 minutes) where you’ll discover a delightful little lake with water lilies, and, nearby, the Alpeggio Mornera which belongs to Diego Grossi . Here you can buy a semi-soft cheese with MORNERA marked on the rind. If the same cheese is made on the other side of the yard it has ‘PIE MORETTI’ on the rind! Both can be sampled and bought at the Grotto Mornera and the Grotto Romitaggo at Monte Carasso. Follow the signs through the woods and fields and after an hour you’ll get to Alpeggio Monda, run by Angela Tognetti. In the middle of this stunning panorama she makes cheese with goats’ milk or a mixture of both cows’ and goats’ milk. You can buy formaggini, formaggelle, robiole, ricotta, and butter before returning by the same path.
