This trail which covers the entire length of the Schwyberg mountain offers spectacular views of the Mittleland and Jura mountains, as well as the Swiss Pre-Alps and Alps.
From the Schwarzsee-Gypsera bus stop, continue along the main street before taking a narrow path on the right which will take you uphill Schlossisboden and Salevorschis. It continues on to the Fuchses Schwyberg, where the now defunct chair lift stops. From here you can enjoy a breath-taking view of the Fribourg Pre-Alps, from the Kaiseregg, the Schopfenspitz and Vanil Noir as far as the Moléson and La Berra. The next stretch is almost entirely flat, followed by a slight descent to Hapfere Schwyberg.
At the edge of the Philipona forest, you will cross an expansive field of alpine roses – an ideal eco-friendly souvenir of your trip. These flowers with their distinctive rust-tinged leaves are indigenous to the entire Northern Alps. They tend to grow in very large fields and their simple beauty is a sight to behold.
Further along the trail leads to the Hohi Schwyberg and finally to the Gross Schwyberg. The alpine cabin is open in the summer months, from early June to late October. The view from here is spellbinding. In the north, you will see the city of Fribourg and its surrounding countryside, and as far as Lakes Murten, Neuchatel and Biel. The Jura mountain range, and the distinctive Chasseral mountain, appears on the horizon. To the east is the Gantrisch mountain range and behind it the Bernese Alps.
There is then a slight descent to the Gurli, a popular alpine restaurant with wonderful panoramic views. To return via Schwarzsee, go via Herenchnöwis and Liechtena.
Alternative A: Rather than returning to Schwarzsee, you can hike to Plaffeien:
From Gross Schwyberg, you hike to the ridge and on to Lehmas Bärgli. From there is a steep descent to the hamlets of Ober Hapferen and Holler. Finally, you will reach the village of Plaffeien, which has a regular bus service to Schwarzsee and Fribourg.
