Tour description

The trail from Saas-Almagell to the Mattmark reservoir is a pretty and not overly strenuous tour along a remote valley path. Shortly after leaving Saas-Almagell, the trail passes the Mattmark AG equalising reservoir, which is also the location of the Zermeiggern chapel. This chapel was originally built in 1707, but was moved and rebuilt in 1962 when the equalising reservoir was constructed (for more information, pick up a copy of the church guide “Echt Sakral” in the tourist office). This chapel also displays a memorial plaque for the victims of a fatal accident that occurred during the construction of the Mattmark reservoir on 30 August 1965. The trail then continues on towards the Mattmark reservoir, passing many riverside and pondside firepits.

The path leaves Saas-Almagell and heads south in the direction of Mattmark, initially keeping close to the road. After passing the equalising reservoir, the path crosses over to the left-hand side of the valley and continues along the valley floor until it reaches the largest earthen dam in Europe. Once at the dam, hikers can stop in at the Mattmark restaurant and visit an exhibition where they can learn all about the creation of the dam and how much electricity it produces.
In addition, information boards run along the entire length of the dam, creating a “history mile”. The Postauto bus leaves from outside the front of the restaurant and can take hikers back to Saas-Almagell.

Pay attention to the Postauto bus timetable.

Ask at the tourist offices about possible restrictions on outdoor fires
