Montagnola is the home of the museum dedicated to Hermann Hesse at Casa Camuzzi. This famous Nobel prizewinning writer lived here for all the twelve years he spent in Ticino. Cross the road that leads to ‘Minigera’ and follow the ascending path that converges with the path to Bogogno and leads to Agra (about an hours’ walk).
From here it’s another hour and ten minutes to the church and convent of S. Maria Assunta di Torello where there’s another herb field. The convent was founded in 1217 by the bishop of Como, Guglielmo dlla Torre. It was originally part of the adjacent Augustine monastery, suppressed in 1389, and now a private house. The Romanesque church is surrounded by green lawns and dense woods (key obtainable from Mr. Fausto Piceni, tel: 091 995 14 92).
Back on the road, another 25 minutes by foot will take you to the Santuario della Madonna d’Ongero, which once used to be a shrine for pilgrims . You get to it at the end of a Via Crucis (key from Mrs. Sofia Schmidt, tel: 091 649 72 38). It was built in the 17th C on the foundation of a little chapel built in 1515. The single nave is worth looking at for its 17th C frescoes by Giuseppe A. Petrini painted on the blind arches. These paintings depict, on one side the debate between Jesus and the doctors of law , and on the other the Presentation in the Temple.
Another 30 minutes walking will get you to Carona, also known as the ‘village of artists’, because of the many architects, masons, and plasterers who came from there and then emigrated to Italy and the rest of Europe. Carona has a charmingly picturesque little centre. Especially noteworthy is the Romanesque parish church of S. Giorgio. Built in the 16thC, the choir has been decorated with a fresco of ‘The last Judgement’ by D. Pezzi.
At Carona we recommend a visit to the San Grato Botanical Park, which, with its 62.000 sq. metres, has the largest collection of azaleas, rhododendrons and conifers of the entire Insubric Region both in terms of quantity and variety. From the park it’s also possible to enjoy an exceptional view of the immediate surroundings and of the peaks of the Alps.
