Tour description

Built around 1430, the Bisse du Torrent-Neuf or Bisse de Savièse irrigation channel was once the most ambitious project of its kind. It drew its water from the river Morge before leaving the gorge via a dizzying, dangerous structure to carry plenty of water to the Savièse area. The hike along a 6km path from the PostBus stop (Savièse, Prafirmin Torrent-Neuf) first leads through the forest, then at a dizzy height via the recently restored trail to the hamlet of Brac (1,191m). The original channel, built by Arnold von Leukron under an agreement of 1430, carried water from the Sanetsch region, first from the river Nétage and later from the Morge. A tunnel was built in 1934 to replace the Bisse de Savièse. Work is now underway to make all of the old channel accessible again; four suspension bridges have been built so far, each almost 100m long. There are two bistros on the trail: one at the chapel of Savièseand the other at the end of the path by the hamlet of Brac, first accessible in 2012. The channel hike has virtually no differences in altitude (the profile is deceptive because of the rock walls) and is best followed all the way from the starting point and back.
