Sure-footed hikers with a head for heights and a taste for adventure will certainly appreciate the UNESCO World Heritage high trail. Exposed in parts but always well secured, the path leads from the Bettmerhorn (2,647 m) straight across the summit ridge to the Eggishorn (2,869 m). This hike, designated as an Alpine route, is also an unforgettable experience thanks to the stunning views of the Great Aletsch Glacier, Jungfrau, Aletschhorn and Bietschhorn to the north, as well as the Rhone Valley and the mighty 4,000 m peaks of Valais to the south.
The hike starts from the Bettmerhorn cable car mountain station, where you can take the steep track and reach the summit of the Bettmerhorn in about 30 minutes. From here, continue for about 1.5 km along the ridge secured with climbing aids until you reach an escarpment (with fixed ropes to hold on to) and descend to the Elselicka. For your own safety, it's best not to depart from the signposted trail on these sections! Walk along the wide hiking path for about 45 minutes until you reach the Eggishorn mountain station, the end of the UNESCO World Heritage high trail.
