This is our last day in the province of Parma . We will be hiking along some mountain chains of the Apennines, and remain on altitudes between 700 and 1200 m.o.s Towards the end of today´s hike, we will leave the main track of the Via Francigena, because the hostel on the Cisa pass seems not to be operational any more. As an alternative, a hostel on the main road is available at the end of this track, to our right hand side on the road leading to the Cisa pass. This hostel is still on Berceto territory.
Bereto is the only major village during this day. The cathedral there is consacrated to holy Moderammus. He was a bishop from Rennes who was on a pilgrimage to Rome in 718 passing through this area. After his pilgrimage, he built a monastastery in Berceto and became its first abbot. Dear pilgrim, what are your plans after having reached Rome?
Variant A: If you do not plan to spend a night in the area of the Passo della Cisa, then you should remain on the main trail of the Via Francigena, which corresponds to this variant. On the Cisa pass, you will then rejoin the following track leading to Pontremoli.
The «Via Francigena» is one of the 3 main christian pilgrimage trails of the Middle Ages, the main axis leading from Canterbury to Rome. This documentation currently covers the most frequented section from Lausanne to Rome.
previous stage: Via Francigena: Via Francigena: Fornovo - Cassio
