Today, we stay in the Lucca province and once more, we hike in a very flat territory. We will experience a mix of agriculture, vineyards, agglomerations and also industrial areas. Nevertheless, we will enjoy a comfortable day.
Our destination Altopascio has a many year’s tradition with pilgrims. Already in 952, a reputated hospice was documented. Furthermore , the «Tau order of knights» had their headquarter here. They were supporting pilgrims on their way to Rome or to Santiago all over Europe . A witness of those days is the bell «La Samarita» in a belltower of the 13th. century, which was ringing at the time to support pilgrims lost in the surrounding marshes to find their way safely to Altopascio.
The «Via Francigena» is one of the 3 main christian pilgrimage trails of the Middle Ages, the main axis leading from Canterbury to Rome. This documentation currently covers the most frequented section from Lausanne to Rome.
