Our today’s program takes us from the province of Lodi in the Lombardia region into the province of Piacenza in the Emilia-Romagna region, South of the river Po. While we had been hiking East most of the time since leaving Aosta, we will now hike South for a while until reaching the river Po close to the village Corte Sant´Andrea. From here, a family called Parisi operates a pilgrim transport service with a private boat to Sopravino on the right hand bord of the Po, 4.2 km down the river. Once we have our feet on the ground there, we are in the region named Emilia-Romagna, whose capital is Bologna.
Soon after leaving Sopravino, we cross another river which flows into the Po from the South, the Trebbia river, which we cross over the «Ponte Trebbia». Then, we hike East again through the suburbs of today’s destination Piacenza, the capital of the local province with the same name.
Piacenza was founded by Etruscans and became a roman colony in 219 B.C., a colony on the Via Emilia. This is a city worth spending a day to explore the Piazza Dei Cavalli, the gothic church San Francesco built with bricks, the cathedral and much more.
Variety A: In case the ferry from Corte Sant´Andrea to Soprarivo is not available, this trail offers an option to get to Pavia on the left hand side of the river Po through the villages Guzzafame and Vallória to Guardamiglio, from where we will follow the Via Emilia (SS9) to Piacenza, passing San Rocco al Porto. This alternative measures 21.7 km, so our today’s hike will be longer.
The «Via Francigena» is one of the 3 main christian pilgrimage trails of the Middle Ages, the main axis leading from Canterbury to Rome. This documentation currently covers the most frequented section from Lausanne to Rome.
