How did the Valaisans used to live, how did their villages look and what characterises a typical Valais house? This leisurely hike to the villages on the sunny side of the Rhone Valley combines the pleasure of walking with a little bit of Valais history.
From Bettmeralp, the hike crosses the beautifully located mountain pastures of Ried and Domo and runs downhill through delightful Alpine meadows to the village of Betten, which you'll reach after about two-and-a-half hours. Betten is a typical Valais village with black larch houses and it's certainly worth planning a short tour. Afterwards, follow the hiking trail from the western end of Betten towards Goppisberg and Greich, both of which can be reached in around 30 minutes on foot. These two pretty Valais villages on sunny mountain terraces offer a clear view of the Rhone Valley and the Valaisian Alps. From Greich you can ride the cable car back to Riederalp, but if you still want more, take another 30-minute hike to the village of Ried-Mörel. The final part of the beautiful village hike leads back to Bettmeralp via the Aletschpromenade.
