Hinter den Weiden

Hinter den Weiden

Tour description

A hanging bridge, wooden blocks across a marsh, an ocean of flowers, a tree cemetery and curious cows - all this on the ridge hike between Sattel and Rothenthurm. The hike begins with the Skywalk on the Mostelberg. To be sure, the longest hanging bridge for pedestrians in Europe is built of steel, but it sways to a surprising degree. Additional adrenaline is produced by the mesh floor, through which the Lauitobel can be seen between your feet. Crossing the Skywalk is free.

One reaches Bannegg, at an altitude of 1440 meters, by way of Bärenfang. At this point one connects with the trail that will take one seven kilometers further to Nüsellstock. Below Hochstuckli it continues on large wooden blocks through a marshy landscape. Now comes the area with the lovely name of «Beyond the Meadows». Here you can see the Rigi, the Lauerzersee and a corner of Lake Lucerne. Once one has taken a few photos, one crosses a pre-alpine landscape taken from a picture book: marshy meadows, scattered gnarled trees and above all, innumerable flowers.

A further «attraction» on this excursion was caused by a natural catastrophe, the stubborn owner of a forest and millions of insects. Hardly any other area was as strongly hit by the Lothar storm as the range of hills between Sattel and the Alpthal. Winds of more than 240 kilometers an hour hit its west side and cut broad swaths through the woods. Because fallen firs are the favorite food of the bark beetles, the fallen wood was quickly cleared away . Not so on the Näbikenfirst: the owner of this woods said that if no one paid him to cart off the wood he would simply leave the trees lying. Of course he thus created perfect conditions for the bark beetle. Once the pests had feasted on the fallen trees, they attacked the living firs and made of them tree skeletons.

Via Chli and Höch Tändli one reaches the Nüsellstock, which offers a good view of the Rothenthurm high moor. Then comes the descent via Nüsell (where there is a restaurant with a terrace) to Rothenthurm.
