This trail passes the “Chrizbode” (Kreuzboden) area, over the Triftalp, still farmed to this day, past the Weissmies Hut, all the way to Hohsaas. The first part of the hike is the same as the Alpine Flower Trail, through an enchanting larch forest. By the Triftalp, hikers also come across the Trift Chapel, which was built in 1939. On this hike, the special highlight for children is the Hohsiland play area on “Chrizbode”, where they can play on the slide or climbing wall, splash around in the water park, try out go-karting, or hang out by “Chrizbode” Lake. And the views of the majestic Mischabel massif and Saas-Fee are simply spectacular from here. This hike features a huge 1,500 m difference in altitude, but it is possible to take a gondola lift for certain sections of the trail.
The trail starts at the Hohsaas Bergbahnen valley station, follows the road towards the “Unter dem Berg” area, where the path turns right (facing uphill), towards the Ziebel play area by the Triftbach stream. Before the bridge, the trail heads south and zigzags to Brunne and on to Triftalp. It leads through the beautiful pasture, over the Triftbach stream, and meanders over the “Spiss” to Kreuzboden. From there, hikers reach a path that follows the moraine and a ski lift in an easterly direction to the Weissmies Hut, which is visible from afar. The way to Hohsaas passes the Weissmies Hut above the Tamatterhang, turns south towards Point 3004, and then finally reaches the second section of the Hohsaas Bergbahnen mountain station. Hikers can then take the cableway back down to Saas-Grund, which seems like a good idea after such a challenging hike!
Alternative A: This alternative route takes hikers through the Tewald forest to a play area, across the bridge over the Triftbach stream, along the path towards “Zer Engi” and past Joseph’s Chapel, which was built in 1939 and offers spectacular views of Saas-Grund. The woodland path through Tewald then reaches a barbecue area with fire pits. Hikers follow a wide mountain road to reach the middle station of the first section of the Hohsaas Bergbahnen, the Triftalp and the trail over the “Spiss” to “Chrizbode”.
(Saas-Grund - Bodmen - Zer Engi - Tewald - Triftalp; 3.4km / 1.5h)
Pay attention to the cableway timetable.
Make sure you plan enough time for the hike and be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and good outdoor clothing.
