Nowadays, animals have to get used to the presence of humans in their forest home, whether they like it or not. To give them some space of their own, the Saas Valley has many protected wildlife areas that offer the animals a large area where they are free to roam, largely unbothered by humans. The Furwald is one such area. Anyone hiking here should do so with respect for the habitat of the wildlife that live here, as this enchanting larch forest is home to many species of wildlife that will not be disturbed by quiet and mindful hikers.
The route sets out from the hamlet of Untere Gasse in Saas-Grund and passes through the Chilchwald forest, into the beautiful Furwald, and then up above the tree line towards Grundberg. At an altitude of around 2,300 metres a.s.l., the trail branches off to the right (facing uphill) and onto the Alpine Flower Trail, before reaching the Almagell high-altitude trail. At around 2,500 metres a.s.l., the trail passes the viewpoint at the Triftgrätji and the Mälliga and continues on towards Kreuzboden. From Kreuzboden, hikers have the option of taking the Hohsaas Bergbahnen cableway back down to Saas-Grund.
Alternative A: The Stelliwald forest route provides an alternative to the protected wildlife area. This trail also starts out at the Untere Gasse hamlet in Saas-Grund. It turns off in a southerly direction just before the Chilchwald forest onto the Suonen Trail towards Dutterchi. In Dutterchi, the trail branches off towards the Stelliwald forest and twice crosses the Laubinu stream. After a long traverse down the valley across the Grundberg, the route continues above the Furwald and back onto the main trail. (10.8km; 961Hm; 4h). Saas-Grund - Dutterchi - Heimiwald - Grundberg - Furwald -Mälliga - Kreuzboden
Pay attention to the cableway timetable.
Make sure you plan enough time for the hike and be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and good outdoor clothing.
